removing steering cable ?

Not sure if this should be engine related or not. This is a chicken or the egg question.

I need to remove the outboard from the boat to take it to a machine shop to extract some bolts in the lower unit to replace the water pump and seals on the water tube (water coming out the tilt mechanism).

I assume (since I've never done this), that I need to loosen the nut and slide the bar end of the steering cable out the tilt mechanism.

It looks like that in order to remove the steering to have the outboard free of the boat, that I need to first remove the outboard to slide out the steering cable. Is this normal to have to remove the outbaord to get the steering cable out or am I going about this wrong?

not unusual, depending on how the boat is built.

Ayuh,... On many boats, the steering cable is pulled, AS the motor is lifted...
