Removing shifting rod on johnson15 hp 1980

Hi
I decide to covert my short shaft johnson 15 hp to long shaft
Have all parts but i cant remove shifting rod to install long one for long shaft.
Is there any catch how to do it or i suppose just un screw it from the bottom.
Iam trying with pliers from the bottom it wont go.

Yes, it simply unscrews from the lower unit.

But it wont gld rod allredy chew up with pliers.
I Spray it with wd40 and try latter
