have removed the outdrive. can play with shifter and get neutral and forward. reverse seems to grab then drop out. do i need running rpm's for reverse to stay in? the shift cable outside cover has seperated where the cable comes thru at the shifter. red outside cover moves but the inside stays still. do i remove this cable from the outdrive end or carb end? do i tape a string to it as i remove it to help get the new one in, like pulling wires in conduit?

have it out. did tape a string to it. seems it has a number on it that is not in the listings for a replacement. the number on it is 986654. parts sellers say it should be 987661. anyway the carb. end was not screwed together as it came apart on the way out. but am sure the drive end, shifter end, red outer covering should be attached to the end piece. will order another.
