I removed the shift assist from both drives. Should I do anything about the extra space on the studs? Note that I had to shim up various touch points on the upper control cable due to excessive play. I plan to replace the cable asap.

I've seen a few setups where someone has abated the shift assist and used bushings/washers to compensate for the gap.

Others that have simply had the springs removed from inside the assembly

I would install a spacer on the pin so that it doesent get caught
Removing it also prevents premature control cable failure
