I want to run the 4.3 merc on my boat before heading to the water for the 1st splash so I bought a set of muffs. The instructions state to remove the prop.
Is this just the standard wording so the manufacturer isn't liable when someone chops of their hands doing something stupid?
Or do I have to remove the prop?

Legalities! NO one takes their prop off to run the engine on muffs.

Put on the muffs.
Lay out the hose WELL clear of the prop.
Do not turn the hose on full blast or the Muffs may blow off when the motor is not running.

DO NOT put it in Gear!
Do not rev up over 1500 rpm and then only up to 1500 to keep the engine from stalling.
Do not allow anyone within 12 feet of the prop.
That means 2 full body lengths. And that includes the dog!
The prop will likely not rotate at all, or it may rotate slowly from the friction on the prop shaft.

Just respect the prop, be safe about it, and you will be just fine. :)

Thanks guys.
I kinda figured I should be able to run the motor on muffs without removing the prop.
I can see why they would put that in the instructions through.

Trim down the drive also...
Remember, when the engine is running, so is the driveshaft, and u-joints. Keeping it trimmed down will reduce wear/stress on the joints, even at "low" RPM's

Actually. some people do.

I even do it if I am demo-ing a motor and there are people/kids/pets in the area.

But I usually use a test tank, so the muffs are seldom used.
