Removing Powerhead

After trying to repair the broken upper shift rod on my 1962 RX-10 28hp by using a brass sleave and JB Weld, I've come to the conclusion that I need to seperate the powerhead from the leg in order to replace the upper shift rod. The "mickey mouse" repair only lasted a few days of use.

My Clymer manual tells me to remove the carb, fuel pump, starter, flywheel, stator, etc. before removing the powerhead. Surely, this is not necessary, is it?

Also, in addition to the seven screws that go from the leg up into the block, are there any other fasteners that need to be removed? The two nuts at the base of the crankcase? Anything else?

Both the Clymer book and the parts catalog leave me unsure as to how I should proceed. If someone could please outline the steps for me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, John

Re: Removing Powerhead

Disconnect the fuel line from recepticle to fuel pump. Disconnect the throttle tower shaft to Mag. plate.disconnect kill switch wires, remove bolts, and nuts to power head, and lift off. Without looking I'm not sure, is there a 3rd nut at the very front of the block. Powerhead will need slight prying action to seperate base gasket.

Re: Removing Powerhead

hello
I think its just the 7 bolts and the two fwd nuts. take off the water pump as well. while the lower is off change the impeller. there is a stainless divider plate on some 28/33 hp engines. dont bend it up. while the power head is off check/replace the quad ring seal at the crank.some place out back I have two of the old 28's that are locked up. might have some parts. if you were close enough we could load ya up :)
good luck and keep posting

Re: Removing Powerhead

Thanks to all for your valuable input and advice. I ordered a new upper shift rod today (thanks Dan at Ganotech!) and will be installing it over the Thanksgiving weekend.

What a great resource you folks are for all of us that have a passion for keeping old outboards alive. I'll post an update on this thread when I get the new rod installed.

John
