Hi all, simple question, I have an I6 140 I'm pulling down. I'm having difficulty removing the power head form the mid section. All the bolts are removed, but so far my efforts are doing nothing.

Any advice to help get me going here? I have tried heating it, but the mass of metal is so much it really isnt having a great deal of effect. I'm assuming its never been split in its life so it has probably 30 years of corrosion... Any advice would be great.

I would NOT use heat.Lay it on its sides and soak with PB blaster for a day or two. You may need a big deadblow hammer 480z-56Oz to get the job done. You might also try using a heavy duty beveled on one sided scrapper 1"1/2 width. The one that looks like a putty knife only thicker.Work your way slowly around the block. Did the same engine 3 weeks ago.

Ah ok, Like I say it was not enough heat to do any damage, I've try some penetrating oil for a few days and see if that works.

I would remove the lower unit first. If you are having a problem with the shift shaft coupler hanging it will show itself right there. If the drive shaft is hanging you will know it then.
If the shift shaft pulls out of the lower unit that is another repair that will need to be done.
I just pulled two 650s apart, early seventies and they both had frozen shift shaft couplers.Ron G

You do not need heat or a BFH, or penetrating oil. You did get the two nuts in the front of the motor? The ones between the midsection and the steering handle? These cannot be completely removed until you hoist the block an inch or so.

Remove the gearcase first. Now with all the nuts off, push on the side of the block at a 45 degree angle to break the adhesion of the powerhead base gasket.

Will have a go at removing the gearbox probably tomorrow, as far as I know, I have got off all the bolts including the two at the front. I think I counted 8 in total.

I'll report back with my findings.
