Looking for advice on removing a 1992 40 HP mercury with power trim off of my boat. Looks to be fairly straightfoward but is there a certain order that things should be done?

One specific question I have is on steering cable there are 2 nuts on either side of the tilt tube. One is called the cable attaching nut and the other is called a cap nut. I have been told that I dont need to loosen either of them, but it sure looks as though they should be. Also is it better to remove steering cable while outboard is mounted or should I wait until motor is hoisted and then take it out?

Any other tips on removing the motor?

Remove the steering cable before you take the engine off the transom, sacnho.

disconnect the battery 1st. if you have room to get the steering cable out, remove it before lifting the motor. disconnect the throttle and shift cables, unplug the wiring harness. the engine weighs 177 lbs,2 people should be able to lift it. have stand ready, to mount the motor on, don't lay it down and scratch it.

Re: Removing outboard

I hang them using an appropriate apparatus. Usually the first thing on and the last thing off is the steering cable. Remove the steering link, run the steering full Left to shorten the steering ram, loosen the cable attaching nut from the tilt tube, lift and swing the motor, extract cable. If you have plenty of room to work with (like on a pontoon), you can deal with the cable any way necessary. On runabouts I find that there isn't always enough room to work with while on the boat.

The nut on the far side of the tilt tube from the cable anchor nut is a grease seal and can stay put.
