I'm gonna be replacing the tilt tube on my motor soon, 77 E-rude V4, and need to know what I need to unbolt so I can lift the motor off transom. I'm assuming I can leave the TNT and transom mount on the motor and just remove the engine with cherry picker. Can I get some advice on this?

Mike

Mike, don't really think you need to remove the engine from the transom. Fact is it'll be easier if you leave it on....unless you gotta' take it off to remove the steering cable. Everything comes off with the engine if you have to lift it. You may have to disconnect the engine wire harness and battery cables if there isn't enough slack to move the engine around.

If you can remove the steering cable with out lifting the engine off, support the at the bottom or use a shop hoist at the top. This is just to keep the engine from leaning back once the tilt tube is removed and get the weight of the motor off the tilt tube. If you can keep the tilt tube holes aligned it will ease the job of getting the new one in.

What OBJ said. Pull the tilt tube 1/2 way out and start the new tube in. Procede from there. Its not very hard to do.

Oh okay so what ya'll are saying is that if I get the weight of motor off the the transom the tube should be accessible then. OBJ, I already shucked the old cable off all that's left is fixing the tilt tube and I'm good to go after that. The plastic sleeve on the starboard grease fitting looks like it's slipped out where it pivots, is that gonna be an issue I need to check out also, and once tube is out should it just slide back in?

I am confused a little...to take the weight off the tube, I can do so by hoisting it a little or by using a jack on the bottom, and can I do that without with the motor still attached like it is now? I'm just looking for the best way to go abouts doing this since I won't have any help. Thanks for the advice so far though!

Mike

I have a guy at work that's gonna loan me his hoist, and I don't know the exact procedure for removing the tilt tube can I get some steps? I going solo on this so I hope it's not too tough to fool with. Do I need to unbolt anything, loosen anything? It looks like it's gonna be fun!

OK fun....LOL.....

Fairly simple Mike, remove the two large nuts on either side of the tilt tube and pull it out. If you do like Walker suggests, slide the new tube in while pulling the old one out. Do take note of the threads on each end of the old tube with the nuts on and set the new tube the same. Some new grease on the new tube will help the process. Just grab the motor with hoist enough to take the weight off the tilt tube. Will make the job easier.

There is a large nut on each end. That's it.

Bingo!!! Thanks for the advice, BTW anytime I'm associated with "fun" it's usually wise to put a little distance between myself and others. I'm glad it's a simple process though, if you can call it simple if you've never done it before. Thanks ya'll

Re: removing motor soon

OBJ, a while back I posted a topic about the tilt tube #. You told me the part # is 321052. On ishopmarine.com the part # on the diagram is 317769. I haven't done the dirty work yet but I was hoping there's not a difference between the two. I can say that the old tube is silver, while this one is black. Also since I was looking at the sketches of motor I wondered how the motor's gonna move when lifted it just seems like everythings is bolted together and fixed into place and that picking up on it would just pick the whole back of boat up too. Don't ya'll worry I'll shut my hole about this once it's all finished.

Hey Mike.....everything I see on 77" V4's is 321052. Just compare the old one with the new one. Actually, I forgot the model number of your engine. Any ways, you just want to support the engine while replacing the tube....not actually lift it. The closer you keep the tilt tube holes together the better. Once the job is done, I expect NOT to hear from ya' cause your on the water...... :D

Re: removing motor soon

thanks I've been on the water once in this boat earlier this spring but that's it. it's a good fixer upper boat and I've had some fun so far. I know what you mean about the supporting, I'll be getting hold of hoist this week and should be easy then, I already got the steering cable run and waiting.

Re: removing motor soon

alright I am stuck in a rut now....I got the motor supported but now I got two problems:

1. The tube is bent so it's being difficult to get out.

2. The tube is wrong, it's too big to fit through the holes.

Sounds like fun huh?
The original tube has threaded ends of equal length, and is same diameter all the way through. The one I got has one long threaded end, and the other end has just a couple threads on it, and it's slightly bigger in between.

Basically I'm stuck right now with a useless tube and hoist I planned on not having to use very long. Bummer.....
