I am trying to replace a water pump on a 1983 Johnson 35 hp. The lower unit only dropped about a half inch. I can not find the pin to release the linkage to get the lower unit to come out. Does anyone have an idea that can help me get this lower unit off.

The shift rod sections are held together with a connector nut. If the lower unit is down by 1/2 inch, you should be able to see it. Also, there's a "keeper" in there, inside the nut casing.

I have the 35hp '83 evinrude; the shift-rod connection is behind the plastic water intake screens.
