Is there some release or trick to remove the lower unit on a 1986 Suzuki 4 Hp. It came aout 3" off, but won't come all the way off. This is on a motor that seems to be siezed up. I wonder if the shaft is stuck up in the motor?

Any tips appreciated.

My Limit

If its moved about three inches are you certain you have freed the gear shift clamp , the one under the rubber bung.

It does not appear to have a clamp like most of the motors I've worked on. It looks like it has a rod that slides up and through a hole. Then the shifting arm just pushes on the rod. It looks like the rod should just pull out. Maybe it's time to buy a Seloc manuel?

You may need to push the gearbox back up and re engage the drive shaft. Place the gearshift in neutral and you shound see under the rubber plate on the drivesahft houseing is the clamp. It clamps the shift od coming down to the gearboz linkage coming up. Dont pull the whole thing to hard or your'll pull the gearshift linkage out of the gearbox and have to pull the covers off to reasemeble it.

This motor is set up different than most. I know what you are saying works on Yamaha and Mercury, but this thing is wierd. I could take a picture and email it to you if you want?

I was only trying to take the lower unit off because the crank shaft is frozen. I thought it might loosen up if I pulled the lower unit off.

Someone told me that I need to use a break bar and just crank the heck out of the nut ontop of the drive shaft to break the motor loose.

This sucks. Any advice?

Are you sure its a zuki ? You can get the parts breakdown from brownspoint.com you'll see the clamp in the lower leg drawings. If its dropped three inches its the only thing that would allow that much movement and still not come free.
I've got the old rusted out powerhead in bits in the garage and the piston is completely jammed.

On the sides of the block are two covers about 2 inches long and 1 wide held in place with a couple of small bolts. These are the transfer covers for the intake . The seals underneath are rubber "o" rings. Remove these and you should be able to see the condition of the rings and the side of the piston. Soak it in some penetrating or 2 stroke oil. If its rusted up you'll be able to tell from there as rust wil wash out. Can you tell if the piston at TDC or BDC , if its seized at either, the flywheel movement is just the con rod rotating on the piston pin and its likely the whole thing is solid.
If you want to get extreme you can get a 1/2 inch socket extension bar in the spark plug whole and give it a few taps. If it still wont move time to tear it down. Let us know how you get on. If it all turns to custard I'm after some parts anyway.

Re: Removing Lower unit Suzuki 4 hp?

I found a rubber cover that peels off the lower unit. It exposes the gear connectors. I unhooked it without a problem. Thanks and great site!
