I believe its a 76 Evinrude 9.9 long shaft and I need to replace the water pump. I have the 6 bolts out but it seems like it is hung up on the drive shaft. Shouldnt it just drop off. Any help would be great. :)

PacificNwest

Im not familiar with that engine but Im sure you have to unhook the shift shaft somewhere.

I unbolted the xtra spacer and I can see the screws that hook up the shift shaft but when I pull down on the unit it acts more like the drive shaft is hanging up, or could that just be junk , sludge what ever hanging it up, or once I get the shift shaft unhooked, give it a big whack and see if it breaks loose.

The lower unit won't come off until the shift shaft is released. You have to take out the upper nut of the two, then the lower unit should come off.

good luck
Steve

Have you unbolted the right section?

With the longshaft, there is an extension casting (that's what makes it a longshaft), and it's the topmost of the six identical bolts you need to undo.

Once you've done this, ease the motor into first gear, and you will see the gearshift join - helb by two setscrews. Use a straight screwdriver to undo the topmost of these two.

The lower unit will now drop, but it might need a few taps to release the top of the driveshaft up in the powerhead. Hold the driveshaft as you do this, so that it stays firm in the gearbox and doesn't slide upwards as the unit drops.

Normally a simple job. You will need fine grade wetndry paper to clean the shaft, and oil to wipe on the shaft before sliding off the waterpump housing - just makes the job easier.

Ciao

Re: removing lower unit on a long shaft 9.9

Ok I took out the top screw holding shift rod and the unit slipped right off, got it all cleaned up and now ready to put on new water pump. Thanks for the help guys , I figured it was some thing real simple.

Ps one more question, there is a o-ring at top of shaft, o-ring on top of water pump, but is there sappost to be one above the plastic tub that slips up to the upper unit. This looked like it just had some high heat sealant on it.
thx

Good one OBJ

Forgot you fella's all have auto boxes over there! How about forward gear instead! The rest of the blurb is accurate, thank goodness.

Sorry about that PacificNwest.

Don't forget to put a light coat of grease in the driveshaft splines.

If this is s salt water motor make sure that the drain hole on the lower leg is clear (and possibly enlarge it). I just went through this with my 1975 9.9. The inside water cavity of the lower unit was packed with crud the consistancy of soft concrete.

PN,

This is all from memory, because about your year there were design changes, so I may not be completely accurate, but ...

Look at the motor from the rear. You should have either seven bolt heads on the cylinder head cover, or nine. The cover stares you in the face as you look at the motor. If you have seven, there should be a stat behind the cover. If you have nine, there's a bulge at the bottom, which houses the stat. Bottom two bolts are difficult, but not impossible.

Renew the stat seal when replacing.

Ciao

yup, this motor has seven bolts, so Ill go pull off the plate and inspect it, I guess since this motor is a 1975 it probably wouldnt hurt to replace it I guess. Thanks for the help. :) :)

Re: removing lower unit on a long shaft 9.9

Ok I picked up the parts couple hours ago and for the low budget price of 60 dollars I received a water pump kit-came with o-rings and even new bolts, and a new water pump and gaskets. Thanks for all the help, I dont want to really go buy a manual on motor because next year or so I would like to pick up a new yamaha 4 stroke, but since this thing runs so great I just cant sell it yet, its been a great trolling motor. That link you gave me Gary looks quit interesting thx. :)

PacificNwest
