Trying to remove the lower unit from a '82 35 HP Johnson (JBAL35CND) I was able to remove all screws from the unit, could pull it down about one inch, had removed all the mechanics connected to the shift mechanism on top, but was not able to remove the axle (where the grease fitting is screwed into) and therefore the unit did not come off. Tried to apply pressure in pulling the rotating axle off, but without success. Have not found any screws to unlock the bolt itself. In addition, I have removed all screws underneath the lower half of the actual plastic engine cover, and would need to replace the gasket ... but can not figure out how to remove the same casing lower half to do so. Can anybody help, while I am still waiting for my repair manual to arrive?

Pull off the water pickup screens on the lower unit. there should be 2 nuts on the shift shaft. Take them apart and there should be a plastic sleeve holding the shift rod together. Remover the sleeve and the shift rod will separate.

Thank you ... it worked!
Hope to find out soon how to get to the top of the chassis, so that I can reinsert the shorter shift shaft.
Does anybody know what the length difference between long and standard or short shaft is (just want to make sure that after removing my extension everything falls back into place).
