Removing Glue Residue From Hull

Hey everyone. The previous owner of my boat, 1988 Celebrity 180 VBR, had a rodent problem at one point, so to be safe, he duct taped down the tarp that he had covering the boat. Removing the duct tape leaves a pretty thick glue residue on the hull, normally I would use something strong like mineral spirits to remove the residue, but i am not familiar with the gel coat and its strengths and weaknesses. What cleaner would safely remove this stuff with out destroying the gel coat? Thanks.

I use acetone or mineral spirits for remaining adhesive from decals and stickers. Works well... but if you stay and rub in one spot you can get the gel coat to come off. I have not mixed and sprayed my own gel coat so i have no clue what the chemical makup of the stuff is and whether it is truly "bad" for the boat. But for the small areas i have worked on... i saw no issues.

Spray carb cleaner on a rag and rub glue off!....WD-40 has some mild solvent in it and would work also!

MEK is some powerful nasty stuff! (Health Dangers)

Try Goo-Gone.
It works better on most messes than you might think.

Glue - be - Gone.... Has worked for me on the name lettering glue on the stern.

Be carefull with the carb cleaner.........It will take the paint right off your car if ya rub to hard.

Brake cleaner works well..Not as strong as the carb cleaner!

I think I have some Goo-Gone and I definitely have some WD-40. I will see how these work. Thanks for the help!

My wife just used that to get packing tape reside off the windows of our "new" van.
It worked great. A little elbow grease, but nothing she couldn't handle.

gee, start with the weakest stuff that will work. Alcohol is used to disolve adhesive. If that doesn't work try turpentine or mineral spirits. If that doesn't get it, graduate to acetone. Acetone is usually safe on gelcoat and most paints.

Remember Acetone + MEK is paint remover. Don't use that combo....
