should replacing the fly wheel cover on a 2001 Johnson 115 be left to a professional because of the armature and timing settings on it? I looked in the Seloc manual and there is no metion on how to go about it. Is there a tork on the covers bolts?

You can do it but get the factory service book, you'll toss that seloc when you see the genuine book.

I think you'll need to replace the gasket under the flywheel cover, why I don't know but thats what the manual states.

I did look for the Johnson manual but couldn't find it for my year so ended up with the Seloc one. My starter bendix actually broke through the flywheel cover. Never heard of this before? The bendix seems fine and working? The cap and washer on top I have to replace but I don't get it? Got to get the motor out and test it. thanks for your reply:)

model # J115PLSIF I think I'm good to go from the Seloc manual after going over it. Again they don't get into removing the flywheel cover but I am going to take digital pictures and write down where everything is before I take it apart. The only thing I am lost on is there a tork setting on the bolts that hold the cover down. The cover is plastic and the base is cast, probably why they want you to replace the gasket. thanks!

would it be OK to run the starter motor on the engine to check it out if the bendix is removed? I am figuring it wouldn't be engaging anything so why not try it without removing it.

On plastic you can only crank down so tight on the bolt before the plastic cover cracks, examine the bolts that come out for signs of thread lock.
I would threadloc and tighten like a sparkplug...no more than that.

What is an unloaded starter motor gonna tell you?
Sounds like something let go in the bendix if the gear went through the roof.

I noticed you have a 2001, those manuals are either ebay or ordered through the dealer. You WILL throw the seloc away when you see the real deal.

The shaft of the bendix where the spring is seems to be working fine, it was the cap and washer and bushing on top that has damage. I just can't figure out what could of happened? Running the starter would be for peace of mind because I'm puzzled. I'm waiting for parts to come in mail.
