Removing exhaust cover

I broke the temperature sensor on my 2002 50hp 4 stroke. The threaded part of the sensor is stuck in the exhaust cover. I am going to try and get it out tomorrow without removing the exhaust cover. If I cannot then I will be removing the exhaust cover to get it out. I know the tightening pattern and torque specs but I am wondering, do I need to replace the gasket if I remove the cover or can I use the one on there? Also, does anyone have any tips for removing the broken temp sensor without removing the exhaust cover?
