Can the average guy remove the outdrive for greasing/inspection, or is it dealer-work? How heavy? Need a homemade support "thing" to move it, or what?

Re: Removing Drive

Captjason: Sorry 'bout that.........It's an old '88 OMC 5.0L. Just bought it from original owner. We're out in the sticks of northern Minnesota. Just learning about the need to grease U-joint and gimbal. Wondering if my husky grandson, and I, can do the mission. If not, gotta hire a local to trail it 50 miles to service -- Camry hitch too light for 400+ lbs .......That's the story.

Re: Removing Drive

Id say you can do it..just read ALOT in these forums about it and you will be good to go. I bought my first boat this summer, 1996 wellcraft, with a 4.3L V6, alpha I gen II, and i redone the gimble bearing, u-joints, shift cable, water pump and all three bellows, I didnt know the first thing about doing it till i sat for a while reading all the posts in here, and i started to feel good about doing the deed. it took me about a week and a half ( i worked real slow ) but i got it all apart and back together, AND THE BOAT STILL WORKS!!! lol.. but just search the topic and start learning, plus it will save you a good chunk of money doing it yourself.
