Alpha 1 outdrive.
I removed it last night with little issue, a bit difficult, but it came off. Then I realized I never put it in gear. What could I have broken? What should I check?

If you're reeeeeeealy lucky, it shifted by itself. Otherwise the number of possible damages go from broken shift arm to bent stripped spline on shift rod to broken/bent shift crank to...requiring tear-down.

Remove the intermediate shift shaft and see if it is bent. Probably is. If it is, then the shaft will bind when you put it back together and it will not shift right until it is straightened / replaced.

Voice of experience.

Wow didn't know all of these problems could happen from not being forward.
Is this only when removing the whole lower or can these things occur when spliting the case to change the impeller?
