Put the nut back on the flywheel so that the top of the nut is flush with the threads, but not tight, put a long screwdriver under the fly wheel and apply pressure and hit the nut with a hammer.

jaa....sometimes if you smack the puller jam screw with a hammer the wheel will pop. If not, keep tension on the wheel with the puller and shoot some Blaster around the crankshaft. Let it soak in and keep applying Blaster or other good penitrating oil. Keep as much tension on the wheel as posible with the puller. Sometimes they will pop on their own. Be careful of smacking the jam screw with a hammer.

OBJim :D

When you say you go a flywheel removal tool do you mean a flywheel puller or just something to help you get the nut off. You don't say anything about using the puller on the wheel. There is a post over the last couple of days regarding pullers.

i think you guys hit the nail on the studd. after reading some previous posts on thes topic i definately must not have the appropriate puller that you guys are talking about. i must have a puller for lawn mower engenes, ect. there is no center bolt piece. i am in the militay and stationed in greece and i got what i thought would do the job seeing how the old greek gentlman couldn't speak near enough engligh to properly assist me. i think i got lucky finding a store that even had such a tool. i guess i will have to wait til i arrive back to the states unless anyone has any more helpful suggestions.

What engine is this,Might be able to make a puller if you have access to a drill and some angle iron and bolts.

jaa...go back to the suggestion that nathany made. Put the flywheel nut on just flush with the threads, put a couple strong prys under the flywheel and smack the flywheel nut. Would help to soak in Blaster or penitrating oil first.

OBJim

thanks guys, i have been soaking with wd40 so i'll give that technique a try and the engine is johnson. don't think it is a 1962 but it looks identical to a 62 johnson 3hp. think it may be a 63 3hp though.

jaa...just a word of caution again...don't get carried away with smacking the nut with the hammer.

Ditto,
Don't get carried away hammering the nut and damage the threads on the crankshaft. If you put a piece of hard wood like an oak board over the nut and wack it you are less likely to damage anything.

If you still can't get it off, get a harmonic balancer puller from an auto supply (<$15 here). You'll have the flywheel off in a minute.

These pullers are available from any auto supply here ... don't know about Greece. Good luck.

Re: removed flywheel nut but flywheel won't budge

tried the pounding with a piece of wood and still no luck so i got tired and decided to start on rebuilding the carborator. actually looked pretty good in there. also took off the power head and cleaned out that area and around the pistons. that area was pretty clean too with exception of a slight bit of burn on top of the pistons but cleaned that up. didn't know what to adjust the high and low speed fuel pins at so i gave them a 1 and a half turn back out. when i got everything back together surprisingly i had great spark so i cranked and it started right up. i had the acceleration set at fast (full power) the engine did not have sufficient power like it should at full power. so, i decreased the acceleration and it stalled. i started it again and left it at full acceleration still the same so, i left it there and pushed the choke back in and once more it stalled. do you think the problem is my high and low speed settings or something else? thanks in advanced.
