Good day. I have a 2003 bf30 BAWL That has served me well for many years. However now there is no compression on the top cylinder and i suspect bad rings. I was wondering if you please could help me with the prosedure for removing the powerhead on this engine. Or perhaps you could direct me to a source for a workshop manual. Many thanks

The powerhead sits on pan base, it's held by large bolts located right under pan, follow the powerhead contour to find them. Will need need to disconnect the throttle linkage to set powerhead free.

Once released, hold powerhead with both hands, one on carb side, the other to rear of powerhead, lever it while moving, shaking powerhead up/down severeal times till frees itself from upper drive shaft. Could take some time, be patient..

Happy Boating

Thsnks for the reply. This would be the normal prosedure yes, and the way i have done many times on other engines.
It turns out to be somewhat more complicated on this engine. As i started dusmantling it by feel and wrench i discovered the following.

To remove the powerhead on this engine you must access polts inside the oil sump.
To remove the oil sump you must remove the leg.
To remove the leg you must remove the leg attachment and the underwater housing.
I basicly had to remove it from the bottom up. The only thing remaining on the bracket when the powerhead was off was the lower cowling.

i guess it was a learning experience.

Now for the rest of the adventure, anybody have any experience changing piston rings on these engines?
