I am trying to drop the lower unit on my 1980 70HP Evirude. I would like to change the water pump. I took the bolts out and marked the tab to realign. I tapped with rubber mallard with wood block not to damage anything, but will not drop down. Do I need to do anything else to drop lower unit? Please help. John

You must disconnect the shift rod. It is held by a pin under the carburetor. The pin's head faces and is reached from the port side of the engine.

Thanks for the info. I will look for the pin. Does the shift control have to be in forward or reverse position? Also, is there electrical shift wires to disconnect to drop lower unit? Thanks, John

Reverse makes it easier to replace. The last electric shift was 1972 model, thus no wires on yours.

thanks, I will put it in reverse position. I had a 1970 johnson and broke the wires when I took the lower unit off. Thanks for the tips. John in New Orleans.

Be careful not to rotate the shift rod while you have the lower unit free of the motor. The rod rotates easy and happens if your not careful while working on the water pump. Rotating the shift rod effects the length adjustment of the rod which will result in poor shifting when it is wrong. Also, look closely at and memorize the orientation of bend in the rod where it connects to the shift lever. Won't need to guess during reassembly.
