I am going to get moving on removing the engine from my Excursion later this week. Any advice? Never pulled a motor on my own.

Might also want to post on the Ford truck forums. I have pulled motors but never big blocks like that.

Get one of the truck repair manuals at the auto parts store if you don't have one. Pretty much complete step by step instructions. You might also need to rent an engine hoist.

Make sure you are on solid ground, and have a darn good engine crane, rated at least 2 times the engine weight, I have had engine cranes tip over on me and it is never a pretty picture, do not try to pull the engine and tranny as a unit, that I have found is always an out of balance situation and I have done quite a few of them over the years. Take as many of the extras off the engine you can get away with, are you going to rebuild this engine or put a new one in? And as GA said, make sure and get a manual, also get a tilt plate to bolt in place of the injection unit, they make it quite a bit easier when you need to tilt it to get it out.

Oh by the way, make sure and pull the hood off, if you bang it up, it will be expensive to replace!(don't ask)

One other thing I do, when I pull engines these days, is I pull the front wheels off and put it on jack stands set to a low level, makes it easier to pull, you don't have to raise it so high to get it out.

And make sure to drain ALL of the fluids!

Take your time, and make sure you get everything off, or disconnected. You have good advice here from all, with the most info from MTboatguy

Re: Remove engine from truck.

I remember the first engine I pulled, it was a 289 out of a '65 Mustang, no engine crane, we actually stripped the block in the car, including the crank, pistons, manifolds, everything and I pulled the grill out, stepped in the engine compartment, stuck my arms in the first two cylinders and lifted that sucker up and then a buddy of mine slid a board under it and then we lifted it out together.

Man I was a lot younger back then! And stupid!

By the way, I forgot to mention, make sure and get an engine stand, they are cheap and make life a lot easier.

Pull the front end off the truck - grill, radiator, hood. Best thing to use would be an a-frame type hoist if you can rent or borrow one - that V10 is going to be tough to do with a cherry picker style hoist. I've got a steel supported I-beam in the shop with a trolley hoist on it that is built well enough to pull a 460, but don't go using your rafters unless you support the load vertically and horizontally with something strong enough to take the weight.

An engine stand that'll support a V10 isn't going to be cheap. Even the cheap ones that are rated to hold a big block are marginal for that and pretty tippy.

Re: Remove engine from truck.

I pulled my 460 with my roll around 2.5 ton, but we put outriggers on the legs about mid point to stabilize it more. He should be able to rent an engine stand that will handle the V-10 pretty reasonable, but it does put a time limit on how long you can let it sit there!

Based on the thread at the 460ford.com the 460 this guy put in his boat weighed in about about 620 pounds, there is a chart on the various Ford engines weights.

Now the Ford V10 based on specs weighs in at about 640 pounds, so they are pretty close in weight, if he strips the motor, he should be ok with a decent engine stand. Of course he could just use the same thing the guy in the boat thread did to put his engine back in!

How much does your A-460 engine weigh? - 460 Ford Forum

Re: Remove engine from truck.

Since you are doing this for the first time.............

Go to the grocery store and buy a package of the Glad lightweight disposable plastic containers and keep your bolts separate and mark the containers.

Use masking tape to mark the wires you take apart........

Have an couple of adequate tarps available to cover the engine.

Be certain the work area is clear and dedicated to the job. You WILL be dropping tools and bolts (we all do) and a creeper is nice to have on hand.

Take LOTS of digital pictures from various angles because your brain will not remember things.

Before you remove the hood be certain to scribe marks where the hinges are since it will help with lining them back up.....

So .....

Glad containers
PB Buster
Hand cleaner (Lots of it)
Nytril gloves
A couple of good sharpie markers
Masking Tape
Plastic blue tarps
Digital Camera
Manual
Tools
A wire brush and a can or two of spray brake cleaner to clean off bolts and grease before you put a wrench on them.

Remember, it is not a race. Do not bull your way along........ finesse works better.

Re: Remove engine from truck.

in addition to Bob's comments. have a few bandaids available, and a few beers

start with pulling the battery, air cleaner assembly and draining the fluids
then remove the radiator, hoses, and drop the exhaust
disconnect the fuel lines, then label, plug and zip tie out of the way.
disconnect the electrical lines, label and zip tie out of the way.
unbolt the freon compressor and pull to the side (leaving the lines intact)
pull the trans
take a break
connect the hoist to the lift lugs
pull the motor

I bet the wiring harness on that engine is a beast, tag the connectors for location, and I bet there is a ground strap from the block to the frame or cab don't forget that one.

Because it blew towing the boat back from Wilmington. Oil, coolant all under the truck. Cant pull the heads with the motor in the truck more than likely a total loss and will be putting a used one back in it.

Ayuh,.... Then I'd go with Old Jeep, 'n pull the front clip off the truck 1st,....

The way Ford stuffed the motor Under the cabs, ya might end up havin' to Lift the cab, just to get clearance to pull the motor,...

Re: Remove engine from truck.

It will be impossible to lift the cab on this type of vehicle, I have helped a buddy pull the diesel out of this model and it was not all that bad, but knowing more now, I would also pull the front clip which will make it much easier getting the engine out and another one in. The excursion is not actually a truck, it is an SUV model, which is why it would be impossible to raise the cab, but you might be able to raise the body in the front to gain an little extra clearance, but like I said, we were able to pull the diesel in this model without raising the body.
