remove cowlings

I have a 2003 merc 150 saltwater series outboard, been having a heat alarm between 2000-3000 rpm so im replacing stats, impeller and want to change poppet valve at the same time, I located the poppet on the lower starboard
side block and need to remove cowling to access it, I'm a newbie to out boards and its probly a dumb question but how do you remove the cowlings to get at that darn poppet valve, any help would be much appreciated
