Removal of Prop shaft on 9.9hp Merc

I have a 1989 Mercury 9.9hp outboard with a bent prop shaft. I'd like to remove and replace the shaft myself, but I've been told I require a special tool to remove it from the housing. Is there any way I can remove the shaft myself, without the special tool? If not, can someone tell me what the tool is called, and where I could purchase one? Thanks!

So 9.9 have the tool you need built into the prop hub spacer, thake the prop off and if the spacer has a S/S washer around the part that slides into the prop remove it and use the hex nut on the back to unscrew the carrier, remember it's LH thead. If not you may buy one thru a Mercury dealer or if your handy make one.
