Hay everyone another boat question...is it possable to attach downriggers to a 2x6 and lash it to the stern some how or do they make it so that a base is attached to the boat and you can remove the rig it self?

Re: removable downriggers?

I have seen it done before where someone does not want downriggers mounted full time on their boat. they will use a board, similar to what you say, a 2X6 and mount riggers to that and have a couple of other "bases" on the bottom of the board that are removable. Sorry I can not tell you what exactly they used for bases...

My Cannon downriggers have a base that attaches to the gunwales and holds the downriggers in place. Once you want the downriggers off, you just detach and store them. No extra boards to secure.

Buy a couple of gimbal mounts that fit in your gunwale rod holders. Work great. I got a couple of home made models I would be willing to sell.

Re: removable downriggers?

I did that once for a fishing trip on a boat that wasnt mine, the owner did not want holes in his gelcoat so we mounted the slide in scotty mounts on a 2X6 and lashed the board to the stern boat cleats, it works ok if your just doing it for a day or so, but it makes more sense to just bite the bullet and drill the holes in the gell coat, just remeber to use a good backing, like plastic cutting board material.
Most downrigger mounts allow you to remove the downrigger leaving just the mount inplace, but Scotty also makes downriggers that just c-clamp onto the sides of your boat, i would only use them if i was fishing pretty shallow with minimum weight. ie i dont use them!
:)

flyguymv1 :
Most down riggers either come with or you can purchase removable mounts.. When mine are stored I just have a flat mounting plate left on the boat.. For under 20 bucks the same mounts are on my fishing partners boat also.

Have a good one
Link

Scotty downriggers are attached to a fixed plate-you don't want to leave a set of electric downriggers for the thieves.Too bad fishermen have to think like that.

ratherbefishin:
Our Scottys came with a flip up mount that you can just remove one thumb screw to take it off. But like you we remove the four screws holding them to the base plate.. takes less than a minute and you don't have to worry about them growing legs :( sad but true

Link
