Remotes connection with tiller still attached?

Hi and anothert daft question from the mad Scotsman!
I recently bought a lovely boat and and engine which has sat in a garage for nearly thirty years.
The engine is 1973 25 Evinrude Sportster but my question is more of a general one hence the posting here rather than in the 'Rude forum:

There is a set of remotes attached but whoever fitted them left the tiller (with twist grip throttle control) still attached to the engine.

I'm curious to know if this is correct procedure because I've never come across this before and I wondered if leaving the twist grip tiller in place will place an extra strain on the remotes cables when operating the throttle?

thanks for any replies

Did the installation of the remotes bypass the tiller? What happens when you move the remote?

Re: Remotes connection with tiller still attached?

That's the weird thing: when you move the remote throttle you are also moving the twist grip on the tiller.
To my mind this means that you must be putting quite an extra load on the remote cables?

I'm planning to take off the tiller and see if it makes a difference to the force required to operate the remote throttle.

I just wondered if anyone else had ever come across this and could give me a reason why it would have been left like this?

thanks for the reply mark42

Probably is a bit more load on the cable. The only reason I say that is every tiller motor I ever used took a firm grip to twist the throttle.

If possable, remove the tiller components and check that the remote connections are sound. You don't want that coming apart on the water and find out it was "jerry rigged" in the first place.

Better to spend some time on it now than get stuck later. ;)

Thanks mark42, I certainly intend to make sure everything is as close to perfect before venturing out in the boat.
It still beats me why the boat, which is in perfect condition was never used after just a few weeks.....?

I actually bought a boat and motor this way. 1985 15 ft Grumman with a Johnson 20 tiller model with remote control. Soon as I got it home I removed the tiller. Now you got me wondering what I did with the tiller handle, must be out in the shed.

Thanks motorvator, I am just scratching my head at why anyone would leave it this way although I've discovered that the tiller pin is seized. I'm dousing it with penetrating oil everyday and having a quick play with it. It moved slightly last night but still refuses to budge. And of course it's in the one place where you can't get a heat source to it!
I backed off the friction on the tiller grip and the difference it made to the smoothness of the remotes was incredible! It just makes me more keen to get the tiller off completely.

Re: Remotes connection with tiller still attached?

In the 50s deluxe OMC motors had a little stub
indicator instead of a tiller.Esentually the same as a tiller. Ive seen plenty of them with tillers still attached as well.
On the older motors there was little or no friction on the tiller.Im pretty sure the twist throttle on newer motors have a return spring so it returns to idle.
If you are trying to twist the tiller handle still attached to the cables it will be pretty difficult.

spot on steelespike!
I took the twist grip apart and found a lovely return spring that the remotes were fighting against!
I'm still working on the tiller pivot bolt.......one day at a time with lots of penetrating oil. I may give up and just try drilling the thing out but not for a wee while yet. Knowing my luck the drill will slip!
