Remote oil tank questions

I am working on a 2001 OX225 that had overheated recently.
After unseizing the motor I found that the remote oil tank had been run dry and the motor had overheated due to lack of oil,not a water problem as I had been informed.
Since I had the boat apart I removed the remote tank and found the small inline filter blocked to the point of almost no oil being pumped up the line to the engine tank. The pump works fine now and pumps a fair amount of oil from the remote tank to the motor.
While testing the system I found that the system work fine when the key is turned on and the system is calling for oil.The pump will turn on and punp the motor tank full to the top line in the motor tank. With the key still on I can drain the motor tank and the oil level will drop to the point where the pump should turn on,but it does not.Shortly after the alarm will sound and the tank will continue to drain until it is completely empty. While doing so the alarm will continue to sound.
After I turn the key off and than back on,the pump will again pump the motor tank full.
I changed the motor tank oil sensor and this did not correct the problem.
The emergency bypass toggle switch located to the left of the motor tank works correctly, and will pump the motor tank full if I hold the toggle switch up long enough.
I can not understand why the pump will not turn on when the sensor should be calling for oil,to include the alarm being on.

Any body ever go through this issue?

Re: Remote oil tank questions

Try doing this with the engine actually running and I believe you will find this won't happen....it knows if it's running or not and will only work running....

Re: Remote oil tank questions

Thanks Yamahamarinetech40,I tested it with the engine runningh
and it worked like a charm.

Nothing like learning theses things by the school of hard knocks.
I wasted hours, lots of hours, thanks for the help.

Re: Remote oil tank questions

yep, on that motor no automatic oil transfer, other than fillmode, willoccuer with the engine not running.however if it actually seized due to lack of oil you may have other issues running. however I find on wellmaintained rigs we never see clogged filters.
something about that 200 hour OR yearly maint.

a quick note on the precision blend system on that motor.
with the remote tank swictch(swb) closed. tank level ok and the engine tank low, no automatic transfer will occur unless the engine is running.
with the remote tank switch (swb) open or disconnected you get a yellow lamp or a single bar flasing and NO automatic oil transfer willoccur, period.
with the remote tank switch(swb) closed idicating suffecient oil level for transfer and SW3 (engine oillevel low) closed you willget 3 bars or arrows flashing and 180 seconds of oil pump run time.
the system sees a malfunction as it is never supposed to happen that way.
precision blend is a very simple reliable system that will usually trouble shoot itself.however its also the leading cause of failing the master tech exam.

Re: Remote oil tank questions

oh
and another thing.
its barely worth mentioning as everyone reads the tech bullitens and follows the maint schedule.
but I willmention it anyway.
on the 3.1L motors
the engine oil level float is centered in the filter by a rubber disc with 4 little legs.
sometimes the leg curls up and the float cannot drop to the low position creating a situation were if oil cannot transfer from excessive maint the low engine oil alarm wont trigger.
however all Yamaha techs are aware of this and test/inspect the sensder every 200 hours or once per year as published in the yamaha maint guide.
right ?
this is mostly peculiar to the 3.1 motors, however the test/inspect is for all2 strokes.
its blowed up a many a good 3.1 motor, customer aint got a clue, most techs are even more clueless, remote filter never gets changed. clogs one day. the engine sensor never got tested/inspected. now the engine tank is low,the remote tank slam full. the engine tank float cant trigger the low engine tank alarm, due to excessive maintenence. whddya think happens :):)
oh yea my horse gets double hay rations.

Re: Remote oil tank questions

Enjoyed the last few posts Rodbolt, kind of made my day

The oil problem saga continues.I just got off the phone with the owner, who is a friend, for now,who just took out the boat today.

The guy is a great guy,but a lousy boat owner.I spent a great deal of time last year unsiezing his motor after he ran it low on oil.(Could not understand what the buzzing was)After much ring free and other liquid agents, the motor was freed, started and ran fine.He called and said it never ran better, but the buzzzing had started again.I found the clogged oil filter in the remote tank, and a problem with the oil level sensor and corrected that,as you can see above.
He then contacted me and said the boat was good at slow speeds but when he opened it up it would die at top end speed.I changed the gas filters and the filters in the VST etc,and he said todays trip was fine,as he could run the boat at high RPMs with no problems, such as the prior fuel starvation issue.

However he said that there was an issue with oil use,and that he could only get the motor up to 4500 RPM.He went only about 7 miles and used about 7 qts of oil, almost running the remote oil tank empty. It would appear that the motor is running very rich.
Any idea what would cause this, and how can I fix it ?
