I relocated the Remote Oil Tank for my merc V6 and installed the Oil Fill Kit. I had to add about 5' to the oil and air hoses. The top of the tank is now about 3' below the tank on the engin (1' lower than original location). Everything seemed to work well for a couple of days (about 6 or 7 hrs of engin time). After a couple of hours on the 3rd day the engin tank would get low and trigger the alarm. I put the original fill cap back on to check for pressure leaks in the fill kit but no improvement. The other hose connections were all tight. When I got home I took the system apart and found the pickup tube filter coated with an oil slime or gel. The coating was the same color as the rest of the oil, just thicker. After cleaning the filter the system seems to be working ok. The engin has less than 200 hrs on it and only Merc T3 oil has been used.

What are the limits on the Remote Oil Tank location? What is the pressure in the system? Does Merc T3 oil gel or thicken? Can/should the oil be filtered?

The motor is a 95. It has 190 hours on it. I bought the boat after the owners death in June 96 with 19 hours on it. There was Mercury Quicksilver TC-W3 in the boat when I bought it and that is the only brand I have used. This is the first time I cleaned or even checked the filter screen in the tank. the tank holds 3 gals so it takes me quite a while to use a tank. I think I will pour the oil through some nylons and see what shows up.
