remote oil filter install?

So I assume it's possible to install a remote oil filter on a Merc? Have a 2006 Crownline with a 5.7 (non EFI). It has the outdrive oil monitor on the front above the power steering pump. Tried changing the oil today and can't even get my fingertips on the filter. My step-son is alot skinnier so going to have him try later but started thinking about the remote filter setup.

Next question...if I can't even touch my filter will the engine have to come out to install this? Or can skinny arms get in there?

That's one of those questions that we would need to be their to determine. Pics can help, but it would actually take reaching into the best to determine, and you've tried. Like most things on boats they can be real hard to get at. So how much has to be removed to get at it.

many times you have to unbolt a seat or a bulkhead for service. On my searay, I would unsnap the cover over an opening in a partition and sit under the hatch to reach the oil filter. on my current boat with the prior, I would put a pillow on top the carb and hang upside down.

Got it changed thanks to my 145lb step-son...lol. But he could barely get to it. On my boat the water heater is beside the engine near the filter then the water pump then the fresh water tank so no room to move along on that side. There is also only about 8" between the riser and the edge of the deck. After seeing him change the filter I'm sure he could install the remote filter without too much trouble. Mine has the bracket by the lube monitor just like the one in this pic. Is that for the remote filter?

This one isn't mine but the same make/model. The only difference is my hatch ram is on the starboard side. What you can't see in the pic is all of my thru hulls and strainers just in front of the engine so nowhere to stand (AC, toilet fill, macerator, 2 bilge pumps, floats, and my AC pump all there...lol)

Man, you got lotsa room! I had to do a compression test on a hot 454, at sea, where the space down each side was about 2"... Everything had to be done by feel...

How do the remote filters attach to the existing filter arrangement at the block? Does the new remote just spin on like a filter?

Not his boat, just pic of similar for remote

The remote can be mounted there or for that matter anywhere you want to install it, and doesn't have to be on the motor

Got it changed thanks to my 145lb step-son.

Need to get it changed before he gets much heavier

An adaptor goes in place of the filter, then a couple of hoses go from the adaptor to the new filter fitting.

when changing from a spin on filter to a remote filter, you need to change the bolt-on adapter with the bypass valve in it. its bolted to the bottom of the filter embossment.

lol AD. He's 28 years old. Eats like a cow and a solid 145lbs. i hate him....lol.

I bought a brand new 1990 Chevy S10 Baja truck and went to change my oil the first time. Crawled under and couldn't see a filter. Removed the skid plates and still no filter. Called the dealer and they said 'oh, it's up by the headlight'. Right in front of me...lol.

But yeah. I'm 6'0 270lbs. If I would manage to get in there doubt I would get back out...lol

I had my arm in there as far as I could get it and couldn't tough the filter so going by feel wouldn't work either.

The only concern I have with the remote filter is the filter is mounted upside down. 1st is the drainback. I know back in the late 80's I worked at an auto parts store and Fram did not have a check ball in their filters. I had heard that a few manufacturers outlawed Fram filters on their cars and would void the warranty if they caught one on your car. Not sure how true that was. I would imagine most major oil filter companies use check balls now? #2 is changing the filter might get a little messy? #3 when I change my filter I fill the filter with oil. this wouldn't be possible with the filter upside down.

Don't want to get into the fram and other filters relabled, I'll just say I use WIX and they make filters with and without anti drain back valves. Mounting a filter upside down is actually the preferred method and uses a anti drain back valve.

The reason its preferred because to change the oil you take a screw drive or other and punch a hole in the top of the filter. The hole will allow air in and cause all the oil to drain back into the oil pan. So punch a hole, then start setting up the oil sucker. By the time its set up, all the oil is emptied out of the filter.

Now I do like to use the right side up for the reason to prefill. I use a cut off plastic coffee container. Loosen the filter then place the container under it, and unscrure
