Remote Control Key Switch Problem

I have a 1987 Mariner 90 HP outboard. Recently I have had some issues with the Key Switch.

It does not stay on as it should. It started with issues turning the key (like the tumblers or something). Yesterday while running in the yard it was hard to cut to the off position. After fiddling with it I got it to shut off. Now it will go to the start position and will not stay in the run position.

Can someone give me a wiring diagram so that I can install another switch outside of my remote control unit, or give me a drawing of how to disassemble the remote control unit to replace the existing problem switch?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Remote Control Key Switch Problem

Depends on which control you have. To replace the switch just wire it in. The mercury switches are pre wired.
red- battery
black- ground
black/yellow-magneto/grounds switchbox
Yellow/black- primer/choke
violet- accessory power
yellow/red- start solenoid

Re: Remote Control Key Switch Problem

Thanks Jeff,

How do you disassemble the control unit. I have taken the cover off of the forward / reverse lever, but I have never been any deeper into the control than this.

Do you dismount it from the side of the boat and can get to it from the rear, or are there any other tricks to disassembly.

I think it is a quicksilver, but I am not sure how to tell.
