Remote Control Compatabilty

I have a 1975 Johnson 50. 50ESL75B.

I have the original side mount control box. I am remodeling the boat to be a center console (Boston Whaler).

I have purchased a mid nineties OMC binnacle (top mount) control box.

My question has to do with the control cables.

I realize that OMC changed the cable types about 1979, or so. I know the newer cables are different at the control box end.

1. What is different at the engine end?

2. Can I make the newer style cables work at the engine end?

Hey DJ, I may of just ebayed you up some results.

"http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OMC-JOHNSON-EVINRUDE-DUAL-CONTROL-BOX-BR-6116_W0QQitemZ120189092267QQihZ002QQcategoryZ26448QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem"

Hopefully this will be of some help. Or give you some ideas. I went through google for the results on top mount control box for a 75 Johnson. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something out there. If the links above don't help I would keep an eye out on Ebay. There are cables listed on the top link.

P.S. I know the questions are about the interchanging between the old and new I would say you may end up having to get a period top mount control box for the application to work with the 75 Johnson, just my 2 cents.

The controls should work fine, but you'll need to retain your old wiring harness. The throttle and shift throws should be the same for either...

Chine,

I'm not concerned with the wiring. That's an easy do. Thanks.

The (gear/throttle) cables just don 't match up.

What to do? How can I marry this old boxer (2-cyl.) to new controls?

Re: Remote Control Compatabilty

DJ you still piddling with that newer model top mount control box? Post some pictures, normally I am creative in coming up with game plans or ideas in helping but I can't guarantee that I will be able to help in this situation until I see pictures. Also if I can't help maybe one of the other guys can. I still think it might be easier trying to get the same period top mount control box (in a OMC/BRP replacement part or out of a boat salvage yard) compared to adapting the newer style box to the older motor. Or like I mentioned earlier off of Ebay, the search I did there was just a basic search I could just picture searching in title and description how many hits that would bring up.

P.S. Where did Animal come from on post number 3 , :D.

I've used the same top mount controls and cables for a 1975 50HP, a 76 200HP and a 98 90HP. They all hooked up with no issues to the same set up.
