Remote control box issues

I'm having issues with my remote control box. I've been having problems for some time they are just getting worse. I have this style http://www.boats.net/parts/search/O...NNACLE - SINGLE LEVEL - KEY SWITCH/parts.html Anyway mine is getting very stiff when I shift. It shifts into forward OK, not as easy as I would like but OK. Reverse is the problem, you really have to force it into reverse. The problem I have figureing out what the cause is, is that when the cable is disconected both the remote end and the shift lever at the motor seem to work pretty smoothe. When the cable is connected the thing stiffens up. It is almost like something is in a bind.

I have the remote on my work bench now and it seems to work fine whle not under a load. On the motor end things aren't quite as smooth but I can move the shift lever from forward to neutral to reverse and back with 2 fingers and a little bit of force. Does this sound right. I'm just trying to pinpoint the problem before I start tearing things apart.

Thanks.

The cable doesn't seem to be binding if that is what you are asking. Both throttle and shift cable can be moved by hand.

My game plan at this point is to
1. clean and grease up remote control as best I can without disassembling.
2. replace throttle cable...(shift cable is pretty new and throttle cable has never been replaced, it has some striped threads at the boat end, just replacing it because this seems to be a good time to do it. I don't think it is part of the problem.).
3. put it back on the boat and see what happens.

I don't think this will solve anything but we will see. Unless anybody has any other suggestions.

if you disconnect the shift cable and throttle cables from the engine does it still bind??

Re: Remote control box issues

I will let you know a little later. I Just finished greasing up the remote control and picked up a new teleflex cable for the throttle. It will probably take me a whle to pull the new cable and hook it all up again. Guess I should have tried it with only the motor end disconected before I took it apart.

Why do boat builders never put in a big enough chase between the transom and the center console? Things would sure be easier if they would put in like an 8" chase.

Re: Remote control box issues

She is a lot better now. Still seems a little stiff but at least it isn't binding in reverse anymore. I think it was probably a combination of a lot of things. I think all the components were just a little stiff, combine the 3 Remote control, cable and motor and it was just too much. Once I lubed up the remote and changed out the throttle cable it's not too bad now.

Thanks.
