Hey gang, Back from the dead! I finaly recieved my new 600.00 coupler for my 460 OMC Cobra and thinking on having my motor remanufactured by US motors in Kent Washington. Like alot of threads lately' Has anybody had any bad/good experience with them?? Talked to them on phone and asked few questions and they seem ok. But what do I know! Checked BBB and no real issues seen there. Any input would be great!

Re: Reman motor, US motors?

we just bought a 6.5 chevy diesel long block from them and the guys in the shop seemes happy with it and mentioned a good warranty. I piked up a the engine in kent to send to our Fairbanks yard and they had several boats there and look to do a lot of re-powers so at least familliar with marine requirements. good luck!

Re: Reman motor, US motors?

Are you in Western Wa?

If I needed an engine rebuilt I think I would just have a local guy rebuild it for me. This way if there's a problem you just go right on over and stand on their desk! (maybe you are in Kent?)

I don't know anything about US Motors and have never heard of anyone having problems either.

What kind of a boat is it in.......well never mind! I went back and read your previous thread!

You must have gotten one of those couplers from Doug Russell. I wonder how many of them they have and if someone is finally making them again. That would sure make a lot 460 owners happy!

Anyway good luck on the rebuild!

Regards,

Rick

Hey Rick, On the coupler doug russel can get them on a batch type bases. Another words the company they get them from make them in batches of 10 or 12 as I understand. There also another person tooling up to make them also. talked to him in 07 and he said he should be ready by march 08. I don't have his number offhand but anybody needs a coupler I can get it for them. And or check Doug Russel! I have new exhaust manifolds and risers so hopefuly there are no more RARE parts I will need. Cobra outdrive is holding up ok, but need to figure out why it pops out of gear in a in gear idle state.
(very low RPM). I think its the cable and I have the procedure to check and adjust. cable is the correct one (red). Itching to get back in the water!

thanks
Paul

Hey that's great that you're able to get the critical parts!

Those are show stoppers.

Your popping out of gear can absolutely be the lower shift cable adjustment. It takes less force to get it out of gear at idle than at higher power settings (the clutch dogs are undercut....torque holds it in gear)....but if it is popping out of gear you need to fix it very soon. Shift cable adjustment is critical on a Cobra.

I have a complete servie manual that I could provide to you but I really need to let it go with the drive I have (if I ever get it ready to sell)

$600 is a lot for a coupler but considering that they only make a few it's a bargain I suppose.....no choice there. Is someone making manifolds too?

Good luck getting it running. Mine ran pretty good when it ran!

Re: Reman motor, US motors?

If you are popping out of gear, your lower gears may already be toast. Many years ago, my first OMC Cobra was doing that and the dog clutch was toast. Fortunately for me, OMC replaced them for free back in the day when they were still in business.

Hopefully, this just started happening so it is just a cable adjustment/replacement issue. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: Reman motor, US motors?

Will hopefuly the clutch dog is ok, The popping out of gear just started 2 weeks before I blew the coupler (probably what finished off my coupler!).
At least i can get new clutch dogs if needed! (bruceb58) Thanks for your words of encouragment!!! "grumble" "grumble" Question' I have the outdrive on a stand, Is there a way to check the clutch dog without taking it apart ie.. shift it into gear and hold prop and put some torque on the spline shaft? or would it take alot of torque to do so to see if it pops out? Of course I'm going to check lower shift cable first. Rick it would be great if u could scan the section for cable adjustment and mail it to me, Is that possible? I have a copy but its not the best clarity as far as print goes. ( whywhyzed) the exhaust manifold Hardin shows is unavailable at this time. I have purchased 460 to 440 exhaust adaptors and new 440 aluminum exhaust manifolds. So this way I don't have to worry and or new owners when I sell the boat. They aligned right up to my Y pipes and work great! And one more question for you all, I'm building a wood gantry to pull motor and I think 2- 2x6x10' should hold a 750 lb motor what do you guys think??? and thanks for the input from all of ya! Paul
