I wouldn't say I am completely disgruntled, though I am thinking it might be a good idea to find new employment. I currently live in an area that I like, though I have no family. My fiance has family a couple hours south of where we live, though they aren't as close-knit as my family. I currently live in the Rochester, NY area. While my satisfaction with the job has slowly been declining over the past couple of years, I question if I could get paid as good some where else in the area. My fiance is currently in a Masters program and doing very well. Her professors love her and landed a very competitive internship for next year. She will graduate in late spring of 2014.

My parents, who I am close with live in the Tyler, TX area and my sister, who I am also close with is moving back home. I don't mind my home town, though moving back might limit my career advancement. While my sister who went into the field my dad is in, will have no such issue.

The other option is Houston. I am fairly confident that I could really increase my standard of living by moving down there. Also my brother lives there, but I am not a big fan of the area he lives in, which smells from the refineries and paper mills. I also dread traffic and large cities. I also love going on hikes, etc. Though it is also 4 hours away from my home town.

I know my area has some very good schools compared to the ones down in Texas. Also I can boat almost year round in Texas compared to Rochester...well if there is actually water to boat in that is.

As everyone I know has their own bias suggestion, what do you guys, random wise internet people think?

I can relate as me and my wife (we got married 2 weeks ago) are entering a similar mindset to you.

I would say the first order of business is to look at the market where you are trying to relocate and see if there will be available jobs.

I know a lot can go through a persons mind during a transition time like this as me and the wife have had the whole gamut of emotions.

I think ultimately it's not up to the forum if you should make a move, but I'm guessing you can get some good perspectives.

I know a lot of the more common questions I am being asked during the process is, can you afford it, do you have relocation expenses to make the move, do you have kids, pets and how old are you. Do you have a house to sell, and will you be transporting your car and all of your stuff?

If you have medical conditions it is important to understand what level of care your new town can provide.

Would you be moving from a metro area, to a rural area, or vise-verse? I understand the adjustment can be difficult in either scenario.

I am 31, she is 27. We have no kids, only two cats and a dog. We do own a house, I can afford a move. We are both healthy. I prefer area that the burbs end and the rural area begins. I am not the biggest fan of cities, actually dislike them. Tyler is a lot smaller than Rochester, yet Houston is a lot bigger than Rochester.

I have lived in many parts of the US and Hawaii. I chose rural N. Texas about 50 miles west of Ft. Worth. I live very rural; nearest neighbor is about .5 miles away. There are plenty of good lakes nearby.

Career opportunities? I guess that depends on your career. Health care related people can find good jobs anywhere. High Tech jobs are plentiful and the cost of living is about as low as you will find.

One of my daughters lived for a few years in Tyler and loved it. All of my (middle aged) children and the LOML have settled in Texas within a couple hundred miles Close enough to remain tight but not too close.

One daughter lives just north of Austin. Austin is the best small city in USA to live. One grandbuddy lives there and loves it.

Without a better idea of your marketable skills and credentials that is about all I can offer.

My company has 2 divisions in Austin. If you are an engineer, Austin has a lot of opportunities. If you don't have a college degree, it's not too late to get one.

Go where the opportunities are best. now days you may only be there a year to three, keep advancing while you can. IT is a great field to be in where there are large companies.
You can always go home for a weekend visit. 4 hours is a lot closer then several states away.
I would suggest a peek at web sites for companies like Lockheed Martin or GE. They don't always advertise on head hunter boards but do generally have openings.

I am a "System Engineer". I have a B.S. in Information Technology. I do architecture for server environments, a lot of project management, and high level trouble shooting when needed.

My fiance has a BS in Psych and Alcohol Substance Abuse Counselling. She is currently getting her masters in Social Work. She wants to be a Medical Social Worker.

From when I looked there are not that many jobs in Tyler for someone with my skill set and with the pay that I get now. I might have to go into management in IT, though I am not a big fan of politics.

Here in south central PA the winters are easier than yours and Harrisburg has loads of IT jobs.

From the other side...

I've found that you can be happy just about anywhere as long as you have good friends and ENJOY what you are doing. I tell my own (grown) children to have fun and enjoy every single day because if you don't, no one can or will do it for you. I find far too many young people let their jobs define who they are and set limits on their life and amazingly the majority don't even like what they are doing or the job they work at.

Bubba you are sooo damn inspiring! That's it I am moving to Maui... eff it. :joyous: Snow MN will be here when I think its time to come back "home"! I think if your significant other is on-board with it that is a plus hostage.

A lot of people don't necessarily WANT to relocate but are forced due to jobs or family concerns. You just need to understand why you are doing what you are doing, and if you do decide to relocate, you are wise enough to do proper planning.

Re: Relocating, career, and future?

For some folks what Bubba says is Gospel."Like what you are doing and you can live anywhere". For others like me, the converse is true. I like where I live, so I changed careers when the one I was in was leavin' Dodge in a hurry. I coulda moved with the jobs, but chose to stay. Lucky for me I like my new career for different reasons than I liked the original one (I was an aerospace design/manufacturing engineer and now I teach engineering marine labs).

Honestly, only you can answer this. Pick what you love, try not to be short sighted, keep the little ladies wishes up front, and weigh the consequences of change vs the security of holding the line.

Re: Relocating, career, and future?

I don't mind the work I do, I love earning money so I can do the things I really enjoy doing as well as provide for a family. I think to many people try to do what they love and end up not being able to support themselves. Anyway I see my self as pretty adaptable, though I am not a big fan of living in a congested area. I think when/if we have kids I see family as very important to help in raising the kids.

TBH honest I am one of those niave people that want to make a positive difference in the world, while I am here. My biggest issue is getting off my lazy bum and doing something.

Re: Relocating, career, and future?

I can understand you trepidation. 2-1/2 years ago I moved across the country. I went from Alberta where I had lived for 25yrs to the east coast of Newfoundland where I new a total of about 25 people. I had no job to go to but I did know of a project that was near the beginning. DW was thinking of retiring. 23 of the 25 people I knew here were her family that she is very close to.

My suggestion is to look at you career prospects and your DW's. It sounds like you have some decent ideas about where you may want to go to. But, you also said that she was just offered an internship? It may be wise to hold off until she completes her degree. It is only a year. This may give the economy time to improve thereby increasing your job prospects in the meantime.

I'm not positive I understand what you're asking, but if you're just looking for suggestions as to where you and the admiral might enjoy living and have a good shot at finding work in your chosen fields I'd suggest northwest Arkansas. It meets all the criteria you've mentioned. Four seasons, manageable living expenses, plenty of IT opportunities (Wal-Mart and all the ancillary businesses), great mix of rural and urban, great food and culture, and LOTS of outdoor recreation; hiking, biking, boating, fishing, camping, etc...........

I think we are on the same page. What made you happy was where you lived, friends, family, etc. and you found a way to earn a living that you like more than the previous job. I tip my hat to ya!
Yup, we are in sync. I was fortunate to morph into a fed job doing something I love when the career ops vanished. There was a time when I was career oriented too. Now I am more happiness oriented and better for it. The real cherry would be to commercial fish full time and retire when I can't. Soon as the kids are educated and settled that is the goal, about ten yrs from now. For now, I can pinhook two days a week and smile.

ROFLMAO...

I've heard that if you move to Arkansas you are required to buy a double wide.

Well, at least Missouri has one famous invention; the toothbrush. Had it been invented anywhere else it would be called the teethbrush.:boink:
