Use the search function here and search e-tec and you will find plenty of positive posts.

The E-Tecs are highly regarded here. There have been some software updates to fix minor fuel mapping issues here and there, but overall the E-tecs have been extremely well received. The 115 v-4 has been good-

There is alot more info out there on the 3 cylinder 90hp because it has been out there longer. Every once in a while you hear someone grumble, but like all outboards, 90% of the battle is in how you maintain it and take care of it...

Now that the E-tecs have been out for a few years, they have had time to work out the minor kinks. There are no glaring issues out there like what plagued the FICHT motors.

the other thing is look for a transferablewarrenty.
I bought a 175 E-TEC an 07 model in the fall of 06.
tossed number 4 rod out of the block in apr of 08.
dropped it of at the dealer on a saturday and the next saturday they had it ready for pickup.
BRP sent a fully dressed 08 powerhead and 2 gallons of oil.
even though I told the dealership, and I used to work there, that it was most likly my fault due to low usage and NO fuel system maint it was covered and back over board with no questions asked.
good thing, it made the 35mile round trip yesterday and we whacked the crappie :)
not bad testimony from a yamaha master tech :)

And a yamaha master tech called "rodbolt" at that! I've heard lots of good about the e-tecs, but don't own one. I run a '77 Johnson 115. 32 years old and still going strong!

Everyone that has one that I know seem to like them except the guy with the 60hp twin, he has had in for many updates and fixes but they can't get rid of the mid speed surge he has which is right at his planing speed. The only down side it that where I live they don't have a great resale value like the 4 strokes do. The local dealer had been sitting on a 06' Low hour 75hp E-tech for over 6 months and finally sold it for 3800$ with controls. In that time he sold a 02' 50hp honda for 3700$, 05' 60hp Yamaha for 4600$, 04' Suzuki 70hp for 4500$ and many others. I almost had him taking my 98' 70hp Johnsuki 4 stroke + 500$ in trade for the Etec but he sold it. I wanted to give the Etec a try too but I really like my Johnson/Suzuki.

If there was anything inherently wrong or problematic with these engines the message boards would be lit up with complaints or requests for help. You can do a forum search on E-tec and you will find very few issues. Any bad things you read about are generally posted by someone who got the information second or third hand and when pressed for details that person becomes very silent. Probably a dealer or a non-Johnny/Rude owner.
