Hello to all. New guy here on the forum and also new to owning a boat. I have done some searchs and learned quite a bit from your past responses to questions. I'm sorry if this ends up being a little long.

I bought a 1970 Glastron Bayflite V-164 with a 140 Mercruiser at a yard sale down the street. Asked the owner if it ran ok and he said yes and that he had some head work done on it. Took boat home and cleaned and waxed hull and installed new marine battery, didn't have one in it. Checked oil and looked things over for appearant problems only thing I found 2 broken bolts in the bilge. Thought they may have been left from when he had the heads worked on. Put muffs on outer unit and got it started. Heard a rattling sound at certain RPMs and tried to figure where it was coming from. Shut down motor, only ran for 2 or 3 minutes. Found that the starter was not on solid, the broken bolts were what held the starter to the block from underneath. They were broken off inside the block and since I figured there was no way to drill them out with the motor in the boat I had a friend help me me pull the motor. We read the instructions for pulling it from a manual that came with the boat and got it out ok, but the manual didn' say anything about removing the outer unit (more on that later). Drained the oil before putting on engine stand to turn it upside down to fix broken bolts and found water in the oil. Not there when I checked it before starting motor. When I took the intake/exhaust manifold off the motor I found the exhaust port in manifold full of water. Did searches in this form and tracked problem down to Elbo riser. Hole rusted through inside bend in elbo. Also pulled Head and Oil pan since it was that far apart. Found the baffle plate in the oil pan broke off and had that welded back in place. Head looked ok but there is a little rust on the exhaust valve on the #4 cyl. Searched in forum on what if any gasket sealers to use putting it all back together. Sounds like the only place I would use any gasket sealer would be on the joints in the 4 piece oil pan gasket. Please let me know if this is correct.

Searched forum on reistalling motor and found that I need to remove the outer unit to do it correctly and to get the alignment tool and do it right so as to not ruin coupler. Did a search on that and found instructions which also mentioned gaskets when reinstalling outer unit. So I will order the tool and gasket set for that. But before I order that is there anything I am still not taking into account as far as parts or gaskets I will need to put this back together? Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry this is so long.

Thanks to all,

Mark

While you have the outdrive off check the bellows. Those are the rubber tubes where the drive comes off. Also check the gimble bearing. Also ask the prev owner when the impellor was last changed and the lower shift cable. I also would clean the old hard grease from the coupler while the motor is out and the cond of the coupler.

Will using Teflon Pipe Dope on the head bolts change the Torque value? If so how much? Thanks for the replies.

Mark
