I made a OD stand/jack and removed the oudrive.
The OD is mounted with "Ny-lock" style nuts.
Do I need new nuts or will some permatex (or other) be good with the old nuts?

Also I've got MERC propshaft grease, is this alright for the driveshaft/coupling?

Thanks

You don't need to replace those locknuts unless they are worn out and you can put them all the way on with your fingers. I have never seen even 1 of those nuts come loose, let alone all 6.
The grease is another thing. While any grease is better than none, a proper spline grease is a lot better than just some all purpose grease.
Remember the saying Jack of all trades, master of none. Same thing.
Mercruiser has a thing called Spline grease, designed for the job.
Sierra even makes a cheap copy, like it's bellows adhesive, they are both watered down, thin, worthless copies.

ny-loks are cheap i think 25 cents each, will they work if you take on and 10 times probly maybe, its your brand new drive.castle locks work for ever i think 50 cents each, maybe overkill but at three bucks heck i can afford it.

OK Glenn,
Seams like a good thing. The castle nuts I'm familiar with are on the trailer axel, with a cotter pin.
Got a picture of the ones you mean?

Thanks

I'm nut sure what Glenn is talking about with this castle nut thing, the studs aren't drilled for one thing, and those cotter pins would be a PITA to work with every time you pulled the drive. The Volvo locknuts are also NOT standard nyloc's, they have washers built in and are chrome covered brass, and list for $2 each. Evem Mercruiser doesn't use standard SS locknuts, they use standard looking nylocks, but they are also chrome covered brass nuts. SS nuts would gall the threads and destroy the nut and the stud.

Ayuh,... Not only are they chrome plated brass,...

They're fine threaded as well, which makes 'em hard to find...
Pretty much an OEM kinda thing...

Castle nuts are the ultimate locking nut. Available in Stainless steel or brass.... yes you need a cotter pin, sorry when you said nylock i was thinking ones with nylon tip,the ones that push out after couple uses,i didn't think they were stock items, something you were adding on your own for some reason,i know at work when we dont want something coming loose there wired.you no its staying put.
