Regulators: OEM or not?

I suspected I'd blown my regulator using the battery switch while running - no tacho, volts at battery the same whether engine running or not. The Seloc manual has a static resistance test.

Did the static test after a fashion - I don't have thick and thin red wires. The tach resistance was completely wrong, as was the resistance of a stator input to ground. A new one will be needed. A supplier in the US quoted me for a CDI regulator with a different part No. (also more expensive at $120 + $9 P&P). Is it a direct replacement? I await his reply.

Still never found the Mercury part No.

1995 115 Hp 4 cyl Mercury OG198241

Re: Regulators: OEM or not?

Looking at Mercury parts express pages (again and again!), there appears to be an item on the diagram (ref#10) which looks like the regulator, but there is no part No., or name, only N/A. do they not supply the part anymore?

Maybe I got the wrong site - mercruiserparts.com seemed to be just a links page

Got the site, but both of those part No.s cannot be found, and trying to find by picture, it just gives a rectifier, not the rectifier/regulator that I think I need...

Re: Regulators: OEM or not?

Excellent! thank you very much for all the help guys. Strange that the Mercury Parts Express page has n/a for the regulator....but ref#10 on the Mercruiser page is definately the same picture as that on the Mercury Parts Express page.

Only one question remains: if the CDI component is better and cheaper, is it a direct fit? no "cutting and shutting" to get it on?

Re: Regulators: OEM or not?

CDI has great products, all are dirict fit or in cases with differant style connecters supply the adapter wires, those part numbers are followed by a K --Bob

Re: Regulators: OEM or not?

Thanks for all the help. Interestingly, ishopmarine lists another aftermarket replacement, the Sierra 18-5743. It is the most expensive at$113, but from a Canadian site (can't find manufacturers site), it is capacitor protected from voltage spikes. I doubt that this means you can disconnect the battery while running! However, on this topic, I find it hard to believe that it would be difficult to engineer circuit protection for VRs. Is this a case of ommision to stimulate the replacement market?
