Regulator?

I keep hearing about recomendatios about adding a regulator to motors that don't have one but no specifics. 1983 Merc 150. Can anyone direct me to some more specific info with part numbers? My searching capabilities stink.

My buddys Rex he is a outboard mechanic, it's kinda funny but he just showed up at the house today came home for a week
