I got a used generator with a bad ( leaking ) fuel tank, my thoughts were if I could use my marine fuel tank to supply fuel to the genny ?? My only concern is that the old tank was gravity fed, the marine tanks seem to work off of the pump ball ( the plus is the marine tank is 12 gals ) ??

will this :

.
work with this and the tank on ground level, or is the tank still gonna have to be higher that the carbs ??

the vast majority of engines have a fuel pump... its built into the carb and operates on vacuum pulses. They aren't strong obviously, so they can't generate a huge amount of suction, but its worth a try at least. (I've got somewhere around 30 IC engines, the only ones that don't come standard with a fuel pump are .21 cubic inches displacement, and also happen to run on nitromethane... :D Even small engines like 25cc weedeaters have fuel pumps.)

Why don't you just fix the tank on the generator?

After hurricane Andrew I used my boat six gallon tanks to supply gas for my generator. I put a stool alongside of the generator. I put one end of a rubber marine fuel line into the tank through the fill cap opening. To that end I tied a heavy bolt to keep the line from popping out. I would siphon the gas through the line and put it on the metail input tube to the carb. This is the old fashoned gravity feed method. It worked well then and the few times since when we have been without power.

No way - no how would I use this or a simular set-up on a boat.

I'll have to totally disagree with this one. I have a generator sitting in my garage that is 5 years old and has a good old float bowl carburetor. Happen to have rebuilt the carb last year. Same with my 3 lawn mowers, gas compressor, and my gas pressure washer. Every one of them is float bowl carb, gravity feed with no fuel pump. Just because it has an engine does not mean it has a fuel pump. Doesn't mean it doesn't, but I would say the vast majority of IC engines do not have a pump. The carburetor you are describing is most commonly found on 2-stroke engines. If the generator in question is a 2-stroke it is possible that it has a pumping carburetor, but if 4-stroke I'll bet it is float bowl carb gravity fed.

if it helps the generator is a Black Max 5250 watt, 10 HP Subaru OHV/OHC

the fuel tank was damaged when it slid in the back of a truck against a metal pipe and punchered a large 2 inch gash in the plastic OEM fuel tank

The Subaru Robin engine absolutely has a float bowl carburetor and is gravity fed. You will definitely need a to get the fuel tank above the carburetor to have it work.

Well first, you have to remember is that the Gen set you have is not a marine Genset.
If the gen set is not desighned to pull in water and vent the exaust gas back into the lake, you have to have it either in a well ventillated area on deck, or on the beach.
I would suggest you invest in a good C0'2 sniffer.

Re: regular generator and marine fuel tank, will it get fuel properly ???

I have been using a 6 gallon tank with my 2800 watt Yammie back at the fishing camp for years. I use a standard tank with the standard hose and connectors and I have added a fitting on the generator for the hose to connect and a 2 connection "Y" valve to select fuel source.

I am using the boat tank because I do not want to have to go out in the middle of the night back in the swamps here and refuel. It could actually run all weekend if needed on that tank so once I crank it up I am good to go. I installed the valve so I could use the stock tank, which is about a gallon or so, if I needed to.

As stated by a few here, you need to keep the tank higher than then generator so that the gas gets to the carb easily. Other than that I have never had any kind of problem using this kind of setup. I use the primer bulb to make sure gas is getting to the carb and once you get it started and the gas starts flowing it works fine.
