What has been used to re apply the magnet strip in the flywheel? I have been told rubber cement to epoxy. What is best for this? Thanks.

Even quality super glue will do but I doubt rubber cement will stand the heat. What you need is a high temp super glue or hi-temp epoxy. Loctite does have many different type of hi-temp bonders or super glue. Just make sure the magnet is pressed hard or clamped tight while the glue is curing.

I found most glues are thick and superglue works good.

Make sure the old glue is GONE COMPLETELY!!!
On the magnet too.

I ended up using clear gorilla glue super glue gel. Held everything in place with clips over night. I don't think any epoxy would work as it would be to thick. I don't think there is more then 3~4 thou clearance from stator to magnet strip. I don't think this engine has ever started so quick. Usually takes a few turn overs for it to fire. Now a flick of the key and she fires right up. This gel is some tough stuff. I had a piece of a Lexan windshield that was broken off. I used a few dabs of this stuff and held it together for a few minutes then left it alone for a few hours. It's seems as strong as before broken. This will also be a good gauge of how well the flywheel is weathering. If this holds I think the flywheel should. I will pull the flywheel off after about 10 hours to check it as well. Good stuff. Comments welcome.

On a side note I thought more people would chime in as this seems to be an issue with all of the full ringed magnets on these engines and there must be several thousand still in commission being serviced. I believe with the way mine looked with the glue completely dry that about every one that made it this long will need the service. I hope this thread can help someone.

I have had many of these engines any although this seems to be a common problem I have never encountered a loose magnetic strip.

This was a cost saving device by the factory (factory outsourced flywheels from Prestolite) and really while it works it is a bit anemic. If you ever compared the nagnetic force to the flywheels on Mercury or OMC ignitions, you will see that the Force magnets impressed in the magnetic strip are quite a bit weaker..

I had to do this with my Kohler Lawn Mower engine magnets for the alternator charging. And after researching about the glue to use, I found out JB Weld was the most recommended epoxy used. So I clean everything up and used JB Weld and it worked, and still is working, perfectly. That was well over a year ago now...

As previously mentioned, even simple quality super glue will work. The main reason is because the way the adhesive is use is mainly to support the weight of the magnet to the flywheel. The most force it is subjected to is the initial inertial centrifugal acceleration when starting the engine. Other than that it is just plain centrifugal force which keeps pushing the magnet to the flywheel.
