I have a 85 115HP Johnson. The Reg/Rectifier has gone bad in it. No charging volts (12V constant across batt when running hi or low RPMs) and tach doesn't work 99% of the time. It's been very well tested and all tests say it's bad. On that note... Besides switching polarity and it just plane going bad from age, what can cause a Reg/Rect to go out? I just want to make sure that I check everything that could of killed it before I replace it so that it won't just die again. These things arn't cheap :-(<br /><br />Thanks

What I know about outboards and their retifiers is that you have to be careful when you jump start the motors or switch the battery cabels. The reyifiers cannot take a power surge they will blow.

DHP you convinced me about a year ago to do this. I support you. Maybe you just need a catchy slogan.

Re: Reg/Rectifier HELP!!

Sometime back I put a 9/16 stainless hex nut on each post and an Armstrong 9/16 box end wrench in a plastic tube inside the battery box. It is always there, ready to tighten or loosen the connections.<br /> Add me to the club, we are gaining membership. I learned long ago that using wingnuts equal poor electrical connections..................Piniongear

DHPMarine - search this forum for 'Wing Nuts' and I think you'll find plenty of support. The star washers are new to me, but they seem like a good idea to me. Besides locking the nuts they'll cut through whatever corroded metal is present.

Re: Reg/Rectifier HELP!!

hello<br /> I made a "wing nut"wrench by grinding slots up a 5/8ths( i think, been a long time) socket. fits right over the wings and tightens them nicely. I dont have time nor patience to change out every wing nut I see, I will admit that most of my non regular serviced motors to a one I can flip the cable and loosen the wing nut, but it keeps me in minnow money :) gotta love that loose cable induced regulator fire on a 90* looper :) I make 4 to 5 hundred off each one :) :) .
