Refurbing Galvanized trailer some

Ok, my trailer is on my project list for the winter. It is a single axle galvanized roller trailer. All 16 rollers need replacing and it generally looks bad. I just installed some nice LED lights, so that is good, and the wincha nd jack are new. I had thought about converting the standard smooth rollers to the new style yellow tire type rollers, but the budget probably won't allow that.

I have thought about painting the trailer to match the boat (freshwater only). Is there a reasonable way to paint the galv. metal and get it to stick? It's currently rust colored....

Any opinions on the yellow rollers?

JasonB,

There is not much you can do to get paint to stick to galvanized metal. If it were mine, I would try to use a light coating of aluminized paint. Most hardware stores have it.

The yellow rollers you are talkig about are made by Stoltz. They are non marRing and can be expensive.

The ONLY problem I've had with those rollers is people stealing them.

If your trailer is rusted, a coat or two of rust reformer will chemically tranform the rust to a paintable surface. You'll be able to then paint the trailer. A good commercial paint shop should be able to guide you...if you're really gung-ho you might go all the way to sandblasting. Properly prepared and primed, galvanized metal can be painted with good results. Re the rollers...the inside diameters vary significantly, with some using sleeves to take up slack. On an old trailer, just getting ones to fit properly could be a hassle. Check eBay or other sites to buy the quantity you need...new ones could be $8 to $14 each.

Thanks for the replies. I may just have to live with the looks of the trailer, but it was a thought.

My concern with the stoltz rollers is they are only 3" wide where the standard black wobbles are 4 1/2" I have concerns about having less support area.

Below is a picture of teh trailer in question (pic is two years old). The pic isn't a good one, but the trailer is worse than it looks.
