As many of you know, Yamaha stopped making the I/O many years ago and nobody wants to support it in my area. Has anybody out there tried to refit a Yamaha I/O with a Merc drive? How expensive was it? Can the engine be saved or does that get thrown out too. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I have my Yamaha on a 23 ft. Cobia.

Drive fits right up and you just drill a couple of extra holes in the transom. E-mail Ken at TheCaptKen@aol.com
He has done it many times. Also he might be able to help you with the Yammie. He still has some parts for them.

You missed the point Trent. He wants to know if he can use the MC outdrive on the Yamaha and the answer is no. You have to rip everything blue out and replace it with black. Engine, transom assy and outdrive. You can reuse the guages and controls tho.

Thank you for that Captain Ken. I was afraid that would be the case. I can't imagine it is worth it on a 10 year old 23 ft. Cobia to spend 15K or whatever something like that would cost.

Not _at all_ my area of knowledge (not even close), which is why I'll ask it:

It was my impression that Volvo made the drive for the Yambaby engines. I know they are not straight up Volvo pieces, but based on the (takes a guess here..) SX drive. Wouldn't it be fairly easy then to swap a Volvo outdrive? Possible but not easy? Possible, easy, but expensive?

Just curious.
