I have a 1987 Sea Ray 268 with a mix of wood a rear console is made of Oak and not sure about the rails and misc wood. Will teak oil work on oak? is Varnish better? Has anyone tried Cabot Australian Timber Oil? Any feedback is always appriciated
Thanks
Frank

The 268 does not have that much teak so I would take it all off and sand it and clean it and finish with sikens Cetol. It looks almost as good as varnish but wears much better. You can also clean the teak and oil it but you will have to do it a few times a year.Cetol is not much harder to apply than teak oil.charlie

I've got the same boat... Teak oil for everything, spring and fall. I know for a fact you will regret varnish until it's gone and you can go back to oil.
Happy New Year

Hi Frank,
I live in Australia & use Cabots oil on the rear deck of my house. Deck is roofed but gets plenty of rain blown in by wind. Has to be redone every year but is just a matter of wiping more on with an applicator & waiting for it to dry. No sanding. I would use it my boat 'cept it is plate alloy. Stay away from the varnish. Expensive or cheap it will crack & blister in the weather & you will hate yourself.
Don't have to use Cabots. Any good outdoor timber oil should fit the bill but the trick is to stick with one brand. Some oils will go cloudy if applied over a different brand.
Regards,
Peter

PS. Temp in Brisbane right NOW (2219 local) is 24 Deg C. I'm sitting here in my shorts & T-Shirt. :D :D :D :D :D :D Going out in the C/C chasing Mackeral in the morning. Happy New Year.

If you want to preserve the wood rather than add a hard finish that may crack or peel over time, the best thing to use is:
Mix 3 parts linseed oil and one part terpentine. Apply it with a brush or cloth and just let it soak in. It will penetrate the wood more than any other product because both are all natural products that come from a tree in the first place.
As for color, it adds very little if any.
Good luck
