What is the difference between a trolling reel and a bait casting reel?

I know the smaller type most of the bass fisherman use.

Thanks

Re: Reels

What Bond-o said.

A casting reel has hi-tech features to control casting that trolling reels don't have.

Trolling reels usually have more sophisticated drag systems and are usually bigger.

Re: Reels

A trolling reel is any reel that is used to troll. A trolling reel can be conventional or a spinner.

A baitcaster is a ?hand sized? (some go as far as saying "palm sized")conventional reel with some sort of advanced cast control mechanism.

There are a lot of reels that function as baitcasters as well as trolling reels.

The Abu 7000C3 is a popular freshwater "trolling" reel that is used extensively as a bait caster in saltwater.

Avet manufactures a very popular line of lever drag baitcasters that get used as light tackle trolling reels

Tgpfloat...I troll in No. California lakes with 15 lb lead core and have a Penn 209 and Okuma 452L. I like the older Penn 209, 210, & 309. Check them out on ebay. These are all levelwind...Bob

Re: Reels

I have found 2 reels that I really love for trolling or Casting. One is a Okuma Convector 45 that will hold about 400yards of 20lb of Suffix Line. I use it on a Dawia Saltega 11ft Rod and it does a great job as a hevier. The second is a Dawia Sealine 20,,,it does't hold as much line,,,,but boy is it light and strong!

You need to learn how to cast them though. It's not hard after you learn the reel. I cast on average about 120yds on a football field, throwing a 6oz weight. Penn makes a good reel to!

A trolling reel is most often designed for line holding capacity, while a bait caster is designed to cast well, and often, and be easily controlled while doing same.

Re: Reels

Gear ratio my friends.A baitcaster has a very fast retrieve usually about 5.2 to 1.Conventional reels such as the Penns or shimano TLD's are much slower, but a lot better drags.
