Ok guys. This year Im going for the larger inland freshwater fish. Cats, Sturgeon, Trout, Salmon and such. My 9 year old ultra light with generic 6lb test wont do the trick. Can anyone suggest some reel models that cost under $100 but are capable of holding 40+ lb test? Or a website that sells them?

THANKS!

I don't know if they'll handle 40lbs test line very well, but you might look for a Ambassaduer 6000, 6500, or 7000 series.. Should handle most anything you could throw at it, should be close to the $100 budget, and it will last a lifetime...

SS66

Just after moving to Florida I was looking for an inexpensive reel that would handle 40# test mono. I tried the Okuma 450L. I used these reels for over 2 years catching Grouper and Tarpon. Since then I have switched to the Shimano TLD15's but the Okuma 450L's are still in great shape. The Okuma's cost around $49.00 each.

I was at West Marine and Eastern Marine looking at rods. They both had nice Okuma rod/reel combos for about $90. They were Medium action 20#-40# class rods. A nice setup for the regular guy.

Shimano corsair 400 series is a good bet, for heavy line. 40 pound test?? You must be chasing some big inland fins.

6000,6500 are always a safe bet. Okuma's products are solid as well. 40# is a bit heavy though. Will you mostly be trolling? Longer musky gear might be the all around best choice.
My .02\

bsidetroller

Thank for the reply's guys. I wont be trolling at all. I know 40 is a bit much, but I'll be on the Mississippi looking for monster cats. And my fishing with this heavy line will be done at night.
