Sorry for all the questions tonight but had a good wekend on the lake and got boat on the brain. I have an 82 merc inline six 90 horse merc and i don't know if the reeds have ever been replaced or if they should be?is there a life expectancy or an unwritten rule for these things. Is there a good aftermarket/performance brand i could buy or should i stick with oem?

thanks
dave

Re: reed valves

Ive got an 81-90hp, never had any problems. Ive heard of very few stock reed failures on any outboard, but aftermarket high performance ones can have very short life spans. I dont think its cause for concern. There is a msg board somewhere that specializes in hopping up these old mercs that has good info on this type thing, I havent been able to find it again since I first stumbled on it.
