What would it sound like if my reed valves were screwy?

I would like to know on general principles, what sorts of problems would one expect if reed valves were going bad. Is there a procedure to check them short of disassembly?

My motor has had fuel line replacement, carb rebuilds, fuel pump rebuilds, stator replacement, compression and firing checked, it runs great up to about 2500 or so, then misses pretty bad.

I'll put it in the water today and do my in-gear carb tune up. I had a buggered jet or two in the carbs, but nothing that looks like it would keep them from working.

Reed valves only effect starting and idle a broken or chipped reed will cause a engine to drop a cyl at idle they are actually the intake valves but are held open by engine vacume above about 1500 RPM. Check your rectifier high voltage will break the stator down

Yes, my rectifier was bad -- cracked and obviously the site of some heat. I replaced that with the stator.

starts, Idles fine, my only problem is above 2000 and maybe the carb adjustments will help that.

Thanks for the insight into the reed valves.
