reed valves broke :-) please help (on fire)

Ihave a 1975 merc 50hp 500cc 4 cylinder engine which died at the weekend. started to miss badly then died.<br />stripped carbs with no joy.<br />then noticed that 1x reed valve was broke.<br />have just stripped it down an found reed valve carriers to have broke up (had a bit of luck as a bolt had come free and was floating about in the crank case).<br />reed holders are bolted from out side of crank case and this is where they have broken.any advice welcome please help also now looking for spare reed carriers,reeds,& reed stops. thanks, Will :confused:

Shakespear, how unfortunate for you....we just tore down a newer 50 hp [same powerhead] in our shop yesterday, but this guyonly broke 1 reed block and continued to run it until the cylinder block was not salvageable.....an expensive matter for him....the reasons these usually break, #1 is over revving the motor....after that, crankshaft end bearings that wear out and allow the crankshaft to move up and down in the crankcase, letting the reed stops hit the crankshaft....good luck on the repair...

Thanks oddd1 how do you check wear in bearing is it like end float on a normal crank shaft and what is the tolerance? thanks again for your help.
